Transport Planning
There were four main modes of transport to the games at Eden Park; walking the Fan Trail, train, bus and taxi. Fans were encouraged to use the special event trains and buses and get a free ride to the game when they show their pre paid match ticket. Transport planning for Opening Night at Eden Park was based on an expectation that, at best, 50% of the crowd would use rail, bus or ferry. With an expected number of up to 60,000 fans travelling to matches and therefore increased pressure on our transport system, a comprehensive Transport Operations Plan was developed and Traffic Management Plan was completed in 2010, then peer reviewed and tested at a Bledisloe Cup match on 8th August 2011. The blueprint for the Transport Operations Plan was developed over 3 years and evolved from information from previous large events held at each venue of the RWC which included traffic operations, parking arrangements and public transport usage. The Rugby World Cup Transport Operations Plan provided an overview of the Traffic Management Plans for each competition venue, FanZones and training venues. The plan also outlined special event bus and train services provided for the RWC and was supported by detailed traffic plans that outline the location, timings and type of signage and traffic treatments to be installed at each of the tournament venues. The Traffic Operations Plan for Eden Park was completed and signed off by the Central Traffic Work-stream in April 2010. This plan was then peer reviewed in 2010 by Traffix Group in Melbourne with excellent results. There were a number of minor recommendations that were implemented such as improved signage outside venues.
